I’ve been trying to be more deliberate about apprecciating the time I either manage to, or have to spend outdoors. To that end, I’ve realized that, while I enjoy being outside, my knowledge of the natural world is limited to words like ‘tree,’ and ‘bird.’

There is a lot to learn, of course, but I wonder if I shouldn’t also be focusing on fundamentals, like ‘what kind of tree is that?’ Or ‘yeah, that birdsong sounds good. . . I wonder what kind of bird it is.’

What do you think? How much of the ‘path’ of a nature religion is simply naming — or even being able to understand according to basic, modern science — the nature I enjoy so much? Or how much ignorance can be explained away as ‘cherishing the mystery?’
