In their most recent episode, RadioLab does a really great job of talking about how the idea of ‘worth’ can quickly become an uncomfortable discussion, especially when you measure worth in dollars.
This bit, on the value of a nature, really spoke to me. I could say it’s because the segment represents what RadioLab does so well: combining science, philosophy and a little economics into one approachable package that will blow your mind. The thing is, though, it got to me, because I am the kind of person who likes to put a dollar value on things.
And, it was really interesting to hear how people have done it. Even more valuable is the discussion of how this kind of thinking can inform decisions. And how it can misinform decisions.
I recommend it. It’s insightful, interesting, and it’s a portrait of the kind of person I want to move beyond.
